ABOUT JUDGE CELESTIA MAYS

Candidate for Cook County Circuit Court Judge

Judge Celestia L. Mays was appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County by the Illinois Supreme Court.  Currently, she is assigned to the Fourth District in Maywood where she presides over misdemeanor and traffic offenses.  Prior to joining the bench, Judge Mays was the principal of Celestia L. Mays, P.C., for over 22 years where her law practice concentrated in the areas of family law, probate law and residential real estate closings.  She was also an associate at the law firm of Bourgeois and Bourgeois, where in addition to family law, she also drafted wills and trusts, and assisted with felony and misdemeanor matters.

Judge Mays has been very active in the legal community. She is a past president of the Cook County Bar Association (CCBA), the oldest association of African-American lawyers and judges in the country.  In addition to serving as president, vice president and financial secretary for the CCBA, Judge Mays has served her bar association in numerous capacities, including the following:

  • Chairperson of the Judicial Evaluations Committee
  • Chairperson of the Website Committee
  • Chairperson of the Family Law Section
  • Chairperson of the 90th Annual Awards and Installation Banquet
  • Chairperson of the Lawyer to Lawyer Referral Directory
  • Chairperson of the Publicity Committee
  • Chairperson of the Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Committee
  • Chairperson of the Nominations Committee

In addition to the CCBA, Judge Mays is also a member of the National Bar Association where she served as deputy regional director and treasurer for Region VII.  She was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to the Committee on Character and Fitness, and she is a former board member of LAF (formerly Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago).

Judge Mays has received numerous awards and recognitions for her service to legal community and her civic involvement.  She received the CCBA Presidential Award in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2010 and 2012, and the CCBA Meritorious Service Award for 2002 and 2010.  She is the recipient the Crescent Moon Award of Excellence for Legal Leadership from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Upsilon Sigma Chapter, was named one of 100 Women of Inspiration by TCW (Today’s Chicago Woman) Magazine, and received the Spirit of Detroit Award from her hometown.

 Judge Mays received her B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and her J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy.
